Summary

An interesting reshaping of stereotypes of fantasy。

This is a shorter fantasy book; it is a story with magic, dragons, a villain and choices for the protagonist。 And I felt Jenny’s introspections were absolute outstanding。 I loved all about this story。 It just worked for me。

I had no idea how 'old' this book was as I hadn't heard of it until very recently so I assumed it was a new book。 Turns out not so much。I started it expecting dragons and I spent the first half of the book wondering where the dragons were and if they were ever going to become anything more than things the characters talked about。 At the halfway mark I had decided I would read to the end of the book as I'd made it this far but there was no way I'd read any more of the books。 Then we finally meet I had no idea how 'old' this book was as I hadn't heard of it until very recently so I assumed it was a new book。 Turns out not so much。I started it expecting dragons and I spent the first half of the book wondering where the dragons were and if they were ever going to become anything more than things the characters talked about。 At the halfway mark I had decided I would read to the end of the book as I'd made it this far but there was no way I'd read any more of the books。 Then we finally meet the dragon。 I'm not saying he's the best dragon ever but he certainly improved the book by a large margin。 I flew through the last 90 pages and I now have the second book in the series on reserve at the library。 。。。more

Definitely found a new fantasy author I want to explore。 It gave me slight later Earthsea vibes as the protagonists are older and get tired and need spectacles, not your typical sword and sorcery novel。

Great bookI read a story about Brandon Sanderson that said this book was what turned him on to fantasy。 So I thought I would try it。 And I'm glad I did。 Great bookI read a story about Brandon Sanderson that said this book was what turned him on to fantasy。 So I thought I would try it。 And I'm glad I did。 。。。more

im frankly pretty shocked this hasnt become a classic, well known fantasy novel。 there are some stunningly beautiful passages in here, really eloquent language。 big big fan。 the magic system is great too i love that theres give and take, and it has just enough meat on its bones to make it feel strong and alive without getting bogged down in meticulous details。 common hambly W。

I am usually tentative to dive into classic fantasy, because it doesn't always age well。 However, this was a pleasant surprise。 It's good to see fantasy from the 80s that was already pushing against the tropes and norms that defined the genre。 I am usually tentative to dive into classic fantasy, because it doesn't always age well。 However, this was a pleasant surprise。 It's good to see fantasy from the 80s that was already pushing against the tropes and norms that defined the genre。 。。。more

Love that the protagonist - Jenny - is 37 years old。 It's refreshing to read an older main character。 She's a witch, but she's not very good - to be a good witch, she needs to meditate。 The tension is that she has a family, and a love (John, the Dragonsbane) - and she needs to balance between her quest for more power and her duties and her love。Her peaceful existence is disrupted by Gareth, coming from the South。 He's a representative of the king, and seeks John's help to kill a dragon。 He's ver Love that the protagonist - Jenny - is 37 years old。 It's refreshing to read an older main character。 She's a witch, but she's not very good - to be a good witch, she needs to meditate。 The tension is that she has a family, and a love (John, the Dragonsbane) - and she needs to balance between her quest for more power and her duties and her love。Her peaceful existence is disrupted by Gareth, coming from the South。 He's a representative of the king, and seeks John's help to kill a dragon。 He's very disappointed to discover that John (the only known dragon slayer) killed the last dragon with poison that Jenny supplied。 I liked that Jenny and John are middle aged and secure in their relationship。 Following a hunch, Jenny follows them South。 The situation there is not what is expected: (view spoiler)[there is a dragon (Morkeleb), but they discover that he's tied to the gnome's palace by Zyerne。 Zyrene has usurped the gnome's Stone (which is their repository of magic) and has power; but she has also been stealing essence from people, including the King。 We follow the defeat of Zyrene。 However, this results in Jenny merging with the dragon, and becoming more powerful。 Then - at the end - she turns her back on this power to be a mother to her two children。 I really liked that - the realisation that as the older you get, you have to choose how you want to spend your time。 People are gossipy around Jenny - but there is a scene where she acknowledges this and lets it slide。 (hide spoiler)] I don't feel that I often read mature characters, and her awareness of her limitations (she's not pretty, but she acknowledges that in a way that doesn't feel annoying; she's not powerful and she realises that) really is great。 。。。more

Barbara Hambly's first two "Sun Wolf and Starhawk" novels, The Ladies of Mandrigyn and The Witches of Wenshar, are two of the best fantasy novels I've read。 Dragonsbane is good。 It is similar to the Sun Wolf books in that Hambly's heroes are not stereotypically heroic。 Early in the novel, much is made of the fact that the so-called Dragonsbane, John Aversin, doesn't quite live up to the legendary version of him that bards sing of in their ballads。 Instead of a noble knight in shining armor, the Barbara Hambly's first two "Sun Wolf and Starhawk" novels, The Ladies of Mandrigyn and The Witches of Wenshar, are two of the best fantasy novels I've read。 Dragonsbane is good。 It is similar to the Sun Wolf books in that Hambly's heroes are not stereotypically heroic。 Early in the novel, much is made of the fact that the so-called Dragonsbane, John Aversin, doesn't quite live up to the legendary version of him that bards sing of in their ballads。 Instead of a noble knight in shining armor, the man sent to locate Aversin instead finds an entirely capable but oddly bookish and disheveled man more interested in quoting ancient scholars on the finer points of pig keeping than riding around looking for damsels to save from a dragon's clutches。 In point of fact he already has his damsel, the even more capable Jenny Waynest, a self-taught wizard who turns out to be the real hero of the story--though she's not your stereotypical hero, either。The journey south from the Winterlands, and John and Jenny's early encounters with the mysteriously withdrawn king's decadent court, are well-told。 But it is not until John battles the dragon, Morkeleb, more than halfway through the book, that things get truly interesting。 [Spoilers ahead!] John succeeds in striking a mortal blow against the dragon, but is himself so injured in the fight that he is not likely to live。 So Jenny takes it upon herself to heal the dragon so that it can guide her to healing medicines that can save John's life as well。 During this interaction, Jenny and Morkeleb are linked, and the rest of the novel is all about the relationship between these two completely different beings。 The highest praise I can give to Barbara Hambly is that I wish someone would make her novels, or even just the setting(s) for her novels, into roleplaying game sourcebooks so that I could run these adventures for my D&D group。 That may sound ridiculous, but I've honestly considered rereading her books with the goal of extracting as much information as I can to run a "Kingdom of Hambly" campaign。 Her settings are so interesting, and her characters are so well-drawn and complex, it would be the greatest campaign of my 40-year D&D career。。。。 。。。more

I cannot wrap my head around how amazing Barbara Hambly’s Dragonsbane is! Its a high fantasy novel featuring grown ups。 The characterisation, the relationships, their deliberations, their thoughtfulness, their regrets, their desires, their dreams, their aspirations, evidence of a life lived - its stupendous! Lovely book with a story that improves as it goes along and characters that are entertaining enough to want to quickly pick up the second book in the series。 There are a couple of moments where the dialog gets mired down in trying to imitate what the speech may sound like, but the author doesn't stick with it, so it wasn't a huge issue。 Starts well enough but really improves as it goes along - would recommend it and enjoy readying it again。 Lovely book with a story that improves as it goes along and characters that are entertaining enough to want to quickly pick up the second book in the series。 There are a couple of moments where the dialog gets mired down in trying to imitate what the speech may sound like, but the author doesn't stick with it, so it wasn't a huge issue。 Starts well enough but really improves as it goes along - would recommend it and enjoy readying it again。 。。。more

Really good aspects to this book, but a couple of disappoints。 Characters were good and themes were deep, but the in depth descriptions of every scene cut into the dialogue and slowed the story too much。

A charming if somewhat bulky romp。 I appreciated Dragonsbane for its characters more than the plot--people behave and think like adults, the protagonist Jenny most of all, and for the subversion of certain genre tropes。 That said, knowing *every* thought going through the protagonist can make for arduous reading, which I found to be the case, and I felt the writing at times could have benefitted from being pared down。 Still, I was moved at times, most profoundly by the last two chapters, so I'm A charming if somewhat bulky romp。 I appreciated Dragonsbane for its characters more than the plot--people behave and think like adults, the protagonist Jenny most of all, and for the subversion of certain genre tropes。 That said, knowing *every* thought going through the protagonist can make for arduous reading, which I found to be the case, and I felt the writing at times could have benefitted from being pared down。 Still, I was moved at times, most profoundly by the last two chapters, so I'm glad I stuck with it nonetheless。 。。。more

Jenny Waynest is a middle-aged sorceress who gave up a part of her studies to be with her partner, and be a part of their children's lives。 John Aversin is a lord of Winterlands, the only living man who's slain a dragon, and Jenny's said partner。 When someone comes from the south to ask for John's help in slaying a dragon, Jenny goes with him, and in the process, faces two threats。 First, there is a younger sorceress who pursued the power Jenny gave up, and second, the temptation to a greater po Jenny Waynest is a middle-aged sorceress who gave up a part of her studies to be with her partner, and be a part of their children's lives。 John Aversin is a lord of Winterlands, the only living man who's slain a dragon, and Jenny's said partner。 When someone comes from the south to ask for John's help in slaying a dragon, Jenny goes with him, and in the process, faces two threats。 First, there is a younger sorceress who pursued the power Jenny gave up, and second, the temptation to a greater power than any she's ever known。I liked this story a lot。 Pre-1990s fantasy tends towards a tone that marks it as more somber and sometimes more epic than "modern" fantasy, and that does apply here, but it's not as alienating as that elevation can sometimes be。 I think that's because Jenny herself, our usual POV character, is relatable。 She's someone who essentially chose family over career, and feels bad about the compromise she had to make for doing so。 And it's double-fold: she feels guilty over the leaving her family for long stretches, and guilty she'll never live up to her vocation and the promise her predecessor saw in her。 The fact that dragons and magic are a metaphoric stand in for that career just makes things a little more interesting。Superficially, there's also a resemblance to The Hobbit that I found kind of interesting。 The dragon has taken up residence in the equivalent of the dwarves' mountain, and their displacement into human lands as the dragon reaps said lands is a source of further tension。 Creeping into the dragon's lair feels very reminiscent of the Fellowship striking into the Mines of Moria (I'm mixing Tolkien works, but never mind)。 It's a much more somber book than The Hobbit, and much more local feeling than Lord of the Rings, but it succeeds and I like it quite a bit more than most fantasy from this era。I see Hambly has written other books in this world; I can see why, in that there's clearly unexplored potential she's set up。 And yet, I really liked this as a self-contained story, so I think it'll be a while before I check them out。 。。。more
